PRODUCT DESIGNER

Introduction

Spinlock is seeking a hands-on Product Designer passionate about innovative, sustainable soft goods to join their energetic team on the beautiful Isle of Wight. Spinlock is a global leader in the design and manufacture of premium personal safety equipment, including life jackets, harnesses, packs, and technical soft goods for the marine sports & leisure and industrial sectors.

Main Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of innovative, technical soft goods, from initial concept through to manufacturable product.
  • Work closely with an experienced in-house prototyping facility to bring ideas to life using advanced materials and processes.
  • Take hands-on responsibility for prototyping, testing, and validating new products and design solutions.
  • Collaborate with passionate experts across design, engineering, marketing, and production, ensuring ideas are robust at every step.
  • Visit, communicate with, and learn from suppliers in the UK and internationally to ensure seamless transition from prototype to scaled production.
  • Research the latest trends, materials, and technologies in soft goods, sports, and adjacent sectors, always with a view to sustainability and environmental impact.

General Activities

  • Ensure work is prioritised and managed within budget to meet the product development calendar and margin requirements, and review weekly with the Product Manager.
  • Proactively promote and understand the benefits of B-Corp, ISO9001 & ISO14001 certification to colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending in-house workshops, reviewing professional publications, developing customer relationships, using the Intranet, and attending meetings.

Team

  • You'll work alongside creative, technically minded colleagues in a calm, non-hierarchical setting, collaborating across disciplines.
  • Our company values independence, ownership, and initiative. Designers are encouraged to take real ownership of their projects and ideas, and to learn business and manufacturing hands-on.
  • Spinlock is a B-Corp and ISO-certified, committed to quality, ethical business practices, and environmental standards. They actively nurture employee well-being, learning, and community involvement.

Travel

  • International and domestic travel will be required, including:
    • Supplier and production visits, which may involve extended hours.
    • Attendance at trade shows.
    • Product testing and trials on land and sea.

Skills/qualifications

  •  Minimum 2-3 years' hands-on technical soft goods product design & development with knowledge of construction, materials, processes, and a strong sense for product aesthetics.
    • You don't need marine experience, but a passion for creating market-leading performance soft goods is crucial. They're open to designers with backgrounds in outdoor gear, technical apparel, and sporting equipment. If you thrive on solving 3D technical challenges and want your ideas in production, you'll fit right in.
  • Competence in sketching and 3D design (Illustrator, CAD, or similar tools; flexibility for other platforms).
  • Willingness to "own" projects from ideation through to production, including hands-on prototyping and supplier engagement.
  • Eager to learn and thrive in a detail-focused, systems-driven environment.
  • Able to work from our Isle of Wight HQ.
  • Ability to accurately and efficiently document and specify products, both for sample development and through to production specifications.
  • A strong communicator with some project management experience.
  • Experience in product testing, concept validation, and record-keeping is a plus.
